The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on Thursday announced that the trial runs of the Central Secretariat- Badarpur Standard Gauge line will begin in the first week of July from Central Secretariat to Lajpat Nagar. "This 22 kilometer corridor connecting Central Secretariat with Badarpur, which is close to Haryana, is scheduled to open by September, a month before the Commonwealth Games," says a DMRC official.
This corridor is significant as it would provide easy connectivity to three of the Commonwealth Games venues including Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium (near the JLN Stadium Metro station), National Stadium (near the Central Secretariat Metro station) and Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range (near Tughlakabad Metro station).
The new underground station being constructed will be linked to the existing Central Secretariat station, which is a broad gauge network, and will act as a point for passenger interchange once the Badarpur corridor opens. Currently, it is a terminal station.
"The existing station is being integrated with the new one by cutting the walls of the existing functional station and amalgamating with the new one, providing access between the concourse and the platform levels of the two stations," Kumar Keshav, Director (Project&Planning), DMRC, said.
Simply put, once the Bararpur line commences, the Central Secretariat station will be one and passengers of both Line 2 (Jehangirpuri-HUDA City Centre) and Line 6 (Central Secretariat-Badarpur) can change trains without having to get out of the station or even the platform.
Briefing journalists at the station, where almost 700 people were racing against time to finish the work, Kumar said it was a very difficult and challenging task for the engineers as they had to evacuate tunnels at a depth of 17 metres that runs through the Lutyen's Zone. "It is even more challenging that the new station was built without disturbing the existing one and the train operations. Even the road traffic on the busy Rail Bhawan road was not disturbed," he said.
DMRC spokesman Anuj Dayal said once the new station gets ready, the Central Secretariat station will be the only one in the world where two different gauges - broad and standard - will be operational.
Engineers at the site said a total of 35 metres length of the main wall of the operating station was cut and designers had projected that 10,5000 kg of load has to be supported when the wall is being cut.
They said the wall was being checked everyday thrice at the station and utmost care was taken not to disturb the people and traffic.
According to the DMRC official, "Six new standard-gauge trains have already arrived at the Sarita Vihar Depot located on this line. All six trains are being assembled at the depot and would undergo testing on the main line for load and braking."
"A total of 25 trains - each of four coaches have been planned for use on the Central Secretariat-Badarpur corridor. Initially, these will cater to an expected traffic of about 3.6 lakh passengers per day by 2011," added the official.

Work on Badarpur flyover stepped up
Come October and commuters can expect a smooth drive between Delhi and Faridabad along National Highway Number 2 (NH-2). The construction of the much-awaited Badarpur flyover has been stepped up to ensure the flyover is completed and opened for traffic before the Commonwealth Games. "The deadline
for completion of this flyover is December 2010, but efforts are being made to complete it before the start of the Commonwealth Games,” RK Chawla, Project Director, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said.
According to NHAI, construction of the Rs 340 crore, 4.4-kilometre flyover project has been entrusted to Hindustan Construction Company (HCC), which started the work in December 2008, Chawla said.
According to officials, commuters will have to shell out money for using this flyover and work on the toll plaza has also started near Sarai Khwaja in Faridabad.
“The 20-lane toll plaza is also coming up on Faridabad side; vehicles using the flyover will have to pay the fee at the toll plaza,” Chawla said.
“There will be 10 dedicated lanes for each side of traffic,” officials said.
Officials added that only commuters taking the elevated stretch will have to pay, whereas the road on the surface will be toll-free.

Nation comes to a halt during Bharat bandh
NEW DELHI: Normal life was disrupted in several parts of the country during the ‘Bharat bandh’ called by a combined Opposition on Monday in protest against fuel price hike with the greatest impact felt in NDA and Left-ruled states and Maharashtra.
Sporadic incidents of violence in which buses and trains were targeted and clashes with police who baton charged the protestors were reported during the day-long nation-wide strike.
Several top NDA leaders including BJP president Nitin Gadkari and his colleagues Rajnath Singh and Arun Jaitley and JD(U) Chief Sharad Yadav courted arrest while leading protest rallies in Delhi and Lucknow.
CPM leader Brinda Karat and CPI’s top brass — A B Bardhan and D Raja — also courted arrest during the bandh in a show of strength by the opposition trying to make common cause on the price rise issue to corner the Congress
Security personnel were out in full strength to ensure there was no major law and order problem while hundreds of bandh suppoters were taken into preventive custody.
Banking operations largely remained unaffected. Jaitley and CPM general secretary Prakash Karat claimed the bandh was an “unprecedented success”.
“This protest has been widely supported by the average common man because he is really the target of the government’s policies,” Jaitley said.
Scores of flights were grounded in commercial airline hubs such as Mumbai and Kolkata while protesters attacked buses and trains, blocked roads with burning tyres and organised sit-down protests on key road intersections and inter-city railway links. Several trains were also forcibly stopped.
Schools, colleges and business establishments remained closed as groups of protestors hit streets trying to enforce the 12-hour bandh in some cities.
Life was thrown out of gear in NDA-ruled Bihar, Gujarat, Orissa, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttrakhand and Himachal Pradesh while it was a shutdown in Left-ruled West Bengal and Kerala. There was also a disruption of road and rail traffic.
Several IT firms closed shop in Bangalore as a precautionary measure.
Normal life was also hit in Congress-NCP ruled Maharashtra–mainly in Mumbai and Pune– while the bandh had a lukewarm response in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Haryana where UPA is in power.
The bandh did not evoke much response in the national capital barring in some areas where BJP and Left activists blocked road and rail traffic and forcibly shut shops.
Buses, autos and private vehicles were on the roads since morning while offices reported more than average attendance. However, Metro commuters faced some hardships as BJP workers organised protests at some stations, including the busy Rajiv Chowk.
Services at the Inter-State Bus Terminals at Anand Vihar and Kashmere Gate here were also affected during the morning hours with BJP workers blocking its entrances.
“Wrong economic policies and bad governance of the government are the basic reasons of price rise,” Gadkari said addressing a rally at Chandni Chowk area here.
Flights to and from Mumbai airport were severely disrupted, with domestic airlines cancelling 45 departures and 39 arrivals. Taxis and auto-rickshaws were also off the road in the country’s financial capital,
In West Bengal and Kerala, air, rail and road services were severely affected. Only Air India flights operated out of NSC Bose International Airport in Kolkata as streets wore a deserted look in the eastern metropolis where CITU gave the strike call.
Several persons were injured in as BJP and SP workers clashed with police in Lucknow where BJP leader Arun Jaitley and Samajwadi’s Akhilesh Yadav were arrested.
Besides the BJP, those participating in the bandh are Shiv Sena, Samajwadi Party, JD-U, CPM, CPI, Forward Bloc, RSP, AIADMK, MDMK, TDP, BJD, JD(S), AGP, Akali Dal and INLD.
